Marcal Labs makes free games to play in your web browser, at marcallabs.co.uk. This page explains, in plain English, what information our games use, why, how long we keep it, and what you can ask us to do with it. We have tried to collect as little as possible: there are no accounts, no advertising and no tracking cookies.
Marcal Labs is responsible for the information described here. You can reach us at any time through our Contact us page.
The short version
- You never need to give us your real name, email address or a password to play.
- Your games and characters are kept in your own browser. They only come to our website if you choose to use a save code, play in a shared realm, or back up your characters.
- We count visits anonymously, and we see the made-up names and levels of the characters being played, so we know how many people enjoy the games.
- We never sell or share your information for marketing, and there are no adverts.
What we use, and why
| What | When | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visit counts. A scrambled code made from your internet address, your browser type and the date, plus which page or game, whether you are on a phone or computer, and the times. The code changes every day and cannot be turned back into your address. | Whenever you visit the home page or play a game. | To see how many people play, and on what. (Our legitimate interest in running and improving the games.) | About a year. |
| Your character's name and level, and which game or Mini Adventure they are in, together with the day's scrambled code above. | While you play with a named character. | To see which characters and adventures are being played. (Legitimate interest.) Character names are made up by players; please do not use your real name. | 90 days. |
| Saved games and characters kept under a save code, with the internet address they came from. | Only if you choose "Save on the website" or back up your characters. | So you can carry on from another device. The address helps us stop the save system being misused. (To provide what you asked for.) | Until you ask us to delete them, or we close the game. |
| Shared realms: the realm's name, your adventurer's name and progress, and chat messages you send there. | Only if you create or join a realm. | So friends can play together. (To provide what you asked for.) | While the realm exists, or until you ask us to delete them. |
| Messages you send us with the in-game "Send feedback" button or the Contact us page: the name and words you write, the email address you give (Contact us only), the game version and where you were in the game (feedback only), and the internet address it came from. | Only when you send one. | To read and answer it, and to stop floods of junk messages. Messages are also emailed to us. (Legitimate interest.) | Until we have dealt with it and no longer need it. |
| Puzzles and adventures sent in for the games. | Only if you send one. | To check it and add it to the games. | While it is used in the games. |
Like every website, our web host's servers also keep short technical logs (such as internet addresses and the pages asked for) to keep the site running and secure.
Kept in your browser, not by us
The games store your saved game, your characters, a saved Mini Adventure, the land you are exploring in Explore, and settings such as sound and graphics in your own browser's storage on your device. This is needed for the games to work as you ask, and it never leaves your device unless you use a save code or a realm. You can delete it at any time by clearing this website's data in your browser's settings (which also deletes your saved games and characters, unless you have backed them up). We do not use cookies for tracking or advertising.
Other companies involved
- Hostinger hosts our website and its database, and sends our email notifications.
- Cloudflare (cdnjs), jsDelivr and Google Fonts supply some of the code and the lettering the game uses. Your browser fetches these from them directly, so they receive your internet address, as with any website you visit.
- Our email provider receives copies of the feedback and messages you send us.
These companies may handle information outside the UK, under their own privacy promises and the safeguards the law requires.
Children
Our games are made to be enjoyed by players of all ages, and you can play without telling us anything about yourself. If you are under 13, please ask a parent or carer before sending us a message through the Contact us page or the feedback button, and before using a shared realm's chat.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of the information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it (for example, everything kept under your save code), or object to how we use it. Use the Contact us page, and include your save code or realm name if it is about those, so we can find it. Because we do not ask who you are, we may not be able to link anonymous visit counts to you. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
If we change what our games collect, we will update this page and the date at the top.
